Annual Showcase of Films By and About People with Disabilities

Reel Eyes is a showcase of films by and about people with disabilities that occurs in the spring. 2010 will be the seventh year this event will take place. The lineup typically includes films from popular culture as well as documentaries from the DSS Lending Library.

Films will be shown in Anchorage on March 19th and 20th. Films will also be shown on other campuses in March and April.

Reel Eyes Credit Offering

Credit is being offered at both the 100 level and the 400 level this year. A flyer is available.

Course Descriptions:

These two courses will help participants develop and utilize skills to analyze disability representation in film and other media and increase understanding of disability culture. The two courses will be held together and will include publicly shown films during the Reel Eyes showcase of films by and about people with disabilities.

Topics include:

  • Disability, Identity, and Society
  • Differences between Medical Model and Social Model of disability
  • Examples of disability in film and popular culture

Class time will be used for discussion and movie viewing. Blackboard will be used for online participation after the initial class sessions. Students will complete additional assignments outside of class time.
