Dr. Douglas Causey is the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies. Dr. Causey recently came to UAA from Harvard University's Museum of Comparative Zoology. He is an ecologist and evolutionary biologist by training and has authored over 120 publications on topics as diverse as the natural history of the arctic, human health and climate change, and Aleutian paleobiology.
Dr. Causey's interdisciplinary research focuses on the human dimensions of environmental change, in particular on identifying the interrelations of environmental health, civil stability and national security.
From 1996 to 2000, he worked at the National Science Foundation in the Office of Polar Programs and Division of Environmental Biology, and helped establish several national and international programs in environmental sciences and arctic biology.
The Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies provides coordination with other units of the University of Alaska and the Statewide Administration on matters of research, compliance, sponsored programs and federal initiatives.
The office oversees the Office of Sponsored Programs and provides review and signatory authority for all sponsored proposals submitted to funding sources by the Institution.
The office provides analysis of institutional data on sponsored activities. It provides communications and publications for various internal and external audiences with respect to UAA’s research and sponsored activities including the quarterly OSP Research News and the UAA Research website.
The office chairs the Council on Scientific Research. This Council provides leadership, advice and advocacy in setting the course for research at UAA. The office advocates for and disseminates UAA current research information both internally to the University administration through the Provost and Deans and Directors, and externally to private and public organizations. The office recommends policies to the Provost and the Chancellor for external resource activities.
The office is the focal point for the administration of UAA compliance with regulatory issues including human subjects, animal care and use, and other compliance committees for the Institution.
The office provides leadership advocacy for graduate studies at UAA.
