Alaska's Professional Education for Child Welfare Practitioners - MSW Program

Through funding provided by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Administration for Children & Families, Children’s Bureau, the UAA School of Social Work has entered into a 4 year grant (2004-2007) for the purpose of providing professional education opportunities leading to a MSW degree to prospective and current Office of Children’s Services child welfare staff.

We intend to increase the number and qualifications of potential child welfare workers through a partnership between the University of Alaska Anchorage’s School of Social Work, Family and Youth Services Training Academy and the State of Alaska, Department of Health and Social Services, Office of Children’s Services. By improving the curriculum for the MSW program and providing training in rural Alaska, qualifications of potential employees will be more robust.

By providing traineeships/stipends for students who agree to work in the Office of Children’s Services during the school year and for a corresponding number of years as post-graduate employees, we anchor those students in place at a time when recruitment and retention are at a critical level.
